LAS VEGAS - Junior forward Annii Magliulo posted the third hat trick in school history and the second in her career as she helped the UNLV women's soccer team post a 4-0 shutout of Virginia Commonwealth in the second game of the UNLV/Fila Classic on Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels broke a two-game losing streak to improve to 4-2 on the season, while VCU fell to 2-2. In the first game of the day, ninth-ranked Pepperdine also won by a 4-0 score over Auburn.
Magliulo began the scoring early for the Rebels, as she took a deep pass in the box and drove around the goalie before sending a shot to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 7:09 mark. UNLV added to the lead 13 minutes later, when a shot by Rachael Buscovich rebounded back out to her, and she blasted another shot from 20 yards out that beat the goalie for a 2-0 lead.
VCU attacked more in the second half, outshooting the Rebels 8-3, but UNLV made its shots count, as Magliulo scored back-to-back goals just over a minute apart. Lisa Sternberg sent in a high shot from outside the box, and Ram goalkeeper Chrissy Lloyd misplayed the ball, tiping it behind her to Magliulo, who tapped in the goal for a 3-0 UNLV advantage at the 86:12 mark. She completed the hat trick after collecting a pass through the middle of the box from Angie Inzana and converting the shot for her third goal, making the score 4-0 at the 87:14 mark.
Sophomore Jenna Huff turned in another outstanding game in goal, as she finished with seven saves while earning her third shutout of the season. Lloyd finished with four saves and four goals allowed.
Pepperdine's (4-1) Lacey Ubaldi scored two first half goals to push the Waves out to a comfortable 2-0 halftime lead, and goals by Megan Woods and Jennifer Brewer in the second half gave them the 4-0 victory over Auburn (3-1) in the first game of the classic.
The second day of games will be on Sunday, Sept. 14, as UNLV opens the day against Auburn at Noon, while Pepperdine and VCU square off at 2:30 p.m.
