Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Ronda Brooks scored two goals to help Auburn hand UNLV a 4-0 loss in collegiate women's soccer on Sunday afternoon on the second day of the UNLV/Fila Classic from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels dropped to 4-3 with the loss while Auburn improved to 4-1. In the day's other game, ninth-ranked Pepperdine scored three late goals to post a 3-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth.

The key to the win for Auburn was its defense, as the Tigers outshot UNLV 11-1 in the first half, 18-8 for the game. Brooks scored the first goal of the day at the 11:55 mark, as she sent a shot from outside the box that just got past the UNLV goalkeeper Jenna Huff. Auburn added to the lead when Tiger goalie Megan Rivera's punt was headed by Jac Schwarz to Sarah Steinmann, who collected the ball and sent it into the net from 10 yards out.

Brooks scored again in the first half at the 33:27 mark, as Steinmann sent a cross into the box from the left side, and Brooks' header from five yards was just past Huff's reach for the 3-0 Tiger advantage. The final score of the day came from Sandy Carnes, tapping in Steinmann's corner kick off the left post at the 48:54 mark.

Huff finished with four saves in goal, while Desiree Kelly played the second half for the Rebels and tallied three saves and one goal allowed. Rivera collected two saves to finish with her third shutout of the year.

Pepperdine (5-1) and Virginia Commonwealth (2-3) were in a tight defense battle, as the game remained scoreless until the 70:00 mark, when Megan Woods took a pass from Ali Pavoni in the box and scored from eight yards out for a 1-0 Pepperdine lead. Jennifer Brewer then attacked on a breakaway and saw her first shot blocked by VCU goalie Chrissy Llyod, but collected the rebounded save and sent it right back into the net for a 2-0 lead at the 82:04 mark. The Waves sealed the game with their third goal, when Lacey Ubaldi sneaked into the box and took a pass from the left sideline from Woods just three yards outside of the goal, and easily tapped it in to seal the game for Pepperdine at 86:37..

UNLV returns to action on Friday, Sept. 19, as they take to the road to meet in-state rival Nevada, Reno, at 6 p.m.
