Wisconsin Squeezes Past Rebels

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer team lost in its home opener on Friday to Wisconsin 3-2 at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

With a 1-0 lead, Wisconsin's Phil Doeh was issued a red card and was ejected at 41:17. The Rebels played with a one-man advantage for the remainder of the match.

In the 49th minute, UNLV tied the score with a Victor Arbelaez goal from Alex Hernandez. In the 61st minute Hernandez one-timed a volley to take the lead at 2-1.

However, Wisconsin proved to be too much with goals by Nick Van Sicklen and David Martinez in the 76th and 79th minutes, respectively.

Wisconsin (2-1) had 17 shots for the game, six on goal, while UNLV (0-3) had 14 shots and also had six on goal.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Davidson (2-1) blanked Mount St. Mary's (1-2) 3-0.

UNLV will take the field again on Sunday against Davidson at 12 p.m. at Peter Johann Field. The game will be part of a collegiate soccer tripleheader with Mount St. Mary's and Wisconsin facing off at 10 am and the UNLV women's soccer team meeting Tennessee at 2 p.m.
