SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Top-seeded Henner Nehles of the UNLV men's tennis team advanced through day two of the Santa Clara Bronco Classic and will play for the singles title on Sunday.
Nehles, who is ranked 46th in the nation, was severely tested before finishing off Vladimir Zdravkovic of Pacific 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). Nehles' semifinal meeting was less taxing as the Rebel eased past fourth-seeded Andy Kuharsky of Washington 6-2, 6-2.
He will face third-seeded Amar Sigurdsson of Pacific for the championship beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Sigurdsson advanced after Rebel Aviram Salomon retired because of exhaustion in the semifinals with the score tied at 4-4 in the first set. Earlier in the day, Salomon, ranked 67th, rallied past Jan Macek of Santa Clara 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Before singles will be decided on Sunday, Nehles and Salomon will team up in the doubles main draw. The duo won its quarterfinal match on Saturday 8-5 over Axel Elvik and Greg Horn of San Francisco.
In UNLV's consolation singles action, Romain Massaro downed Matt Phillips of Loyola Marymount 6-1, 6-1 while Joel Kielbowicz fell to Francisco Zepponi of Santa Clara 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5).
