Taking A California Trip

Oct. 14, 2004

LAS VEGAS - With two consecutive conference home wins under their belts, the UNLV men's soccer team (3-7-0, 2-2-0) will head to California for two more conference match-ups. The Rebels will face San Jose State on Friday, and Sacramento State Sunday afternoon.

Junior forward Rod Dyachenko, who was named MPSF co-player of the week, leads the Rebels with two goals, both game-winners, this season. Other goal scorers for UNLV include Chris Wessel, Brendon Bain, and Herbert Flores. Wessel, a freshman, scored the first goal of his UNLV career in the 2-1 Rebel victory over Air Force last Sunday.

UNLV's win over Denver last Friday marked not only a conference win for the Rebels, but the 300th career win for head coach Barry Barto. With this win, Barto became one of only 22 coaches in NCAA Division 1 history to earn 300 wins.

UNLV will face San Jose State (1-8-1, 0-3-0) Friday night beginning at 7 pm. The Spartans are coming off a 4-3 conference loss last weekend against Sacramento State. Tim McKinney, who scored one of SJSU's goals against Sacramento, leads the team with three goals for the season.

The Sacramento State Hornets will end a four-game home stand as they will face the Rebels Sunday at 1 pm. The Hornets (2-7-1,1-3-0) earned their first MPSF win last weekend against San Jose State. Sacramento junior Ricky Rodriguez was named MPFS co-player of the week, along with UNLV's Dyachenko, after scoring two goals and tallying two assists in the Sacramento State-San Jose State match-up. Five Hornets have scored two goals apiece this season.
