SAN DIEGO - UNLV rode another outstanding performance from its defense and three players each scored one goal as the Rebels claimed its first-ever Mountain West Conference regular season championship with a 3-0 win at San Diego State in women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon in front of a record crowd of 571 at the SportsDeck. The win moves UNLV to 12-3-2 overall, and 5-1 in the conference to finish the regular season in first place and claim the top seed in next week's MWC Tournament. The 12 overall wins ties the school record, while the five conference wins is a new school mark.
"The team really battled hard, and converted the scoring chances we had," said UNLV head coach Dan Abdalla. "We played with a lot of heart today, and it really showed on the field. To win the regular season championship the way we have this season is also very special, because we didn't just rely on one or two players, but every game it was someone different stepping up to lead us."
San Diego State fell to 6-7-5 overall and 3-1-2 in the league, and also dropped to the third seed in the tournament. UNLV receives a first-round bye in the tournament, and will play the winner of #4 Utah and #5 Wyoming in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 3:30 pm. This year's tournament is being hosted by BYU in Provo, Utah.
UNLV's first goal came from Heather Killoch, as she received a pass outside the box and kicked a shot over SDSU goalie Sophia Perez at 25:52 for the first score of the game. It also broke the Aztecs' 595-minute scoreless streak. The Rebels weren't done on offense however, as Angie Inzana slotted a shot to the top left post at 61:48 for a 2-0 lead at 61:48. Katie Carney sealed the game with her team-high fifth goal of the year, finding the goalie out of the goal and taking advantage from 10 yards out for a score at 87:03.
The Aztecs finished with 13 shots, while UNLV was credited with five. Jenna Huff broke her own school season shutout record of seven set last year with her eighth of the season, while posting eight saves in goal.
