Last Second Boom

Oct. 31, 2004

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior midfielder Boomer Arbelaez made his last home game a memorable one, as he scored the lone goal of the game with one second left in the match to give the Rebels a 1-0 win over San Jose State on Senior Day in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. With the victory, UNLV moves to 6-9 overall, and 5-4 in the MPSF, while the Hornets fell to 5-10-1, and 4-5 in league action.

Both teams had several scoring chances throughout the game, including a shot by Rebel junior Rod Dyachenko that hit the goalpost in the 80th minute before bouncing back out. The winning score came when Dyachenko drove into the box in the final 10 seconds with a defender on each side. He then saw Arbelaez run up unmarked on the left side and fed him a pass. SJSU goalie Daniel Benton goalie was forced to come out and challenge the shot, and Arbelaez sent a shot past him to the right corner of the goal at the 89:59 mark of the game for the buzzer-beating shot.

Peter Clitheroe earned the shutout for UNLV, finishing with three saves in goal, while Benton posted six saves and one goal allowed.

The Rebels, who finished their 2004 home season with a 4-4 record, play their last three on the road, beginning with a tip to Air Force on Friday, Nov. 5 at 3 pm.
