SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Two UNLV men's tennis players are still alive in singles after day one of the Santa Clara Bronco Classic Friday.
Senior Henner Nehles, who is the tournament's top seed and ranked 46th in the nation, received a first-round bye and then cruised by Mike Wojnarowicz of Loyola Marymount 6-2, 6-4.
Senior Aviram Salomon, who is ranked 67th, also moved on with a bye and second-round victory over Beau Berglund, also of LMU, 6-3, 6-2.
Romain Massaro won his first-round match, 6-1, 6-4 over Phil Kao of Stanford before falling later in the day to Andy Kultarsky of Washington 6-4, 6-0.
UNLV's other entry, Joel Kielbowicz, lost in the first round, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, to John Pettit of California.
Kielbowicz and Massaro also lost their opening doubles match, 8-6, to Matt Phillips and Wojnarowicz of LMU. The duo of Nehles and Salomon received a bye and will play Saturday.
