WOODLAND, Calif. - UNLV's Boomer Arbelaez, who scored two goals over the weekend including a dramatic game-winner, was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Soccer Co-Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The weekly honor is the first in his career for Arbelaez, who shared this week's award with New Mexico's Lance Watson.
Arbelaez, a senior midfielder and Las Vegas native, scored his first goal of the weekend in the Rebels' 2-1 win over Sacramento State on Friday night. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead midway through the second half, but Arbelaez headed in a corner kick from Brendon Bain to tie the game in the 72nd minute, and UNLV scored minutes later and held on for the 2-1 victory. On Sunday Arbelaez provided even greater heroics on his own Senior Day, as in a scoreless game he collected a pass from Rod Dyachenko and kicked a shot past the San Jose State goalie for the winning score with just one second left on the clock for the 1-0 victory. The two goals were also his first two of the season.
UNLV, 6-9 overall and in third place in the MPSF at 5-4, take to the road to play Air Force on Friday at 3 pm in Colorado Springs, Colo.
