COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV junior pitcher Jacqueline Kerrigan was chosen as the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Kerrigan, of Eugene, Ore., earns the first award to be presented by the league this year and claims the honor for the fourth time in her career.
For the week, Kerrigan posted a 2-2 record in four appearances, with wins over MWC rival New Mexico and Mississippi. She allowed just four earned runs on the weekend, three of which came at the hands of then-second-ranked Arizona. In 22.0 innings of work, the Rebels' ace struck out 27 batters and walked just six.
Against New Mexico, Kerrigan threw a complete game over eight innings, striking out 11 Lobos without surrendering a walk or an earned run. She also kept Ole Miss from scoring an earned run, leaving after four innings of work with an 8-1 lead.
Against Arizona, Kerrigan tossed four innings, allowing just five hits and three earned runs to the Wildcats. She suffered the loss after leaving the game down 5-1.
Her last outing of the weekend came against Cal State Northridge and included another complete game effort. She permitted just a single earned run and struck out eight.
Kerrigan and the Rebels continue play in the 2004 season this weekend, hosting the UNLV Softball Classic. Played Feb. 13-15 at two venues, the Classic features 15 of the top teams in the country. UNLV opens tournament play on Friday, Feb. 13 against Hawaii at 5:00 p.m. at Eller Media Stadium before facing No. 2 California at 7:30 p.m.
