LAS VEGAS -
Owen Hambrook got his first career head coaching victory as UNLV shut out state rival Nevada, Reno 7-0 in the first round of the Rebels' annual men's tennis spring invitational, which began Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Playing its first home match of the season, UNLV (1-2) only lost one set to the Wolf Pack (1-3).
The Rebels began the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles play, Henner Nehles quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top spot over Adam Jooste. Also winning for the hosts were Aviram Salomon at No. 2, Romain Massaro at No. 3, Joel Kielbowicz at No. 4, David DiMartino at No. 5 and Marko Blagojevic, who had to a use a third-set super-tiebreaker to win on Court Six.
"I was really pleased with how everyone competed up and down the lineup against a solid Reno team," Hambrook said. "It feels good to get the first home match out of the way and we look forward to a tough one vs. Oklahoma in the next round."
With OU breezing by Weber State 7-0, the Rebels will face the 74th-ranked Sooners in the semifinals Saturday beginning at 1:30. In the other semifinal, Texas-Arlington, a 7-0 winner over Idaho State, will take on New Mexico State, which got by Utah State 5-2. Action in the losers' bracket begins at 10 a.m.
