LAS VEGAS - Notre Dame scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as it rolled to a 3-1 victory over the UNLV softball team at the UNLV Softball Classic at Eller Media Stadium on Saturday.
The Irish (3-1) hit a pair of doubles in the first inning off UNLV starter Jacqueline Kerrigan (3-5), one which scored on a sac fly and the other which drove in the second run.
UNLV (3-6) could not muster an answer on offense as it scattered five singles throughout the game.
The Rebels' best look offensively came on a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Back-to-back walks set up Bridget Byrne, who coolly delivered a single to the outfield, scoring pinch runner Christy Tennes from second. The Rebels still had a pair on when Amber Campbell flied out to end the inning.
Byrne was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game and laid down two sacrifice bunts. But that alone was not enough to overcome UND starter Steffany Stenglein, who struck out 10 in her first win of the year.
The Rebels will wrap up play in the 2004 UNLV Softball Classic on Sunday with a single game against Wisconsin. The game will be played at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park in Henderson at 10:00 a.m.
