LAS VEGAS - Arkansas pitcher Heather Schlichtman threw a no-hitter to defeat the UNLV softball team, 1-0 at Eller Media Stadium on Friday.
In a game forced to start more than four hours late due to poor weather and slow play, Schlichtman (2-2) allowed just two walks and permitted no runners to get past second base.
UNLV (4-8) had one scoring opportunity in the fifth inning, putting two runners aboard on consecutive fielding errors by Arkansas (2-4). But the Razorbacks escaped the jam with a double play when Schlichtman struck out Morgan Bostwick and nabbed Amber Campbell trying to steal third on the same play.
Arkansas manufactured its only run in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a leadoff double by Rachel LeMaster. After moving to third on a sac bunt, LeMaster came home on a groundout to the shortstop by catcher Shana Easley for the game's only run.
Rebel starter Jacqueline Kerrigan (4-7) took the hard luck loss despite giving up just three hits and striking out eight batters against just one walk.
As part of the UNLV Tournament, the game did not begin until after 10:00 p.m. PST. Two previous tournament games went into extra innings, and one underwent a 14-minute rain delay to slow the progress on the field. In fact, one scheduled game was postponed until Saturday.
