LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team gave up three runs in the sixth inning to fall to Utah Valley State, 4-1 at Eller Media Stadium on Saturday.
The Wolverines (1-0) snapped the Rebels' (7-9) three-game winning streak with the late-game heroics.
UVSC took an early lead, scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Kristy Miller.
UNLV tried to battle back, but left the bases loaded in the second and third innings. It finally broke through in the fourth, getting runners aboard on a pair of one-out singles by Morgan Bostwick and Wendy Godwin. A Bridget Byrne walk loaded the bases before Brittany Freight drew a key walk to send the Rebels' first run home. UNLV could manage no more, however, as Joanna Jackson popped up to end the inning, leaving the bases loaded for the third straight inning.
UVSC recaptured the lead in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles to begin the inning. Miller drove her second hit of the day to the gap in right center, then came home to score on a double by Amanda Kendzior. The Wolverines continued to pour it on, collecting two more hits in the inning and taking a 4-1 lead.
Kacey Ellis (1-1) took the loss for the Rebels, her first of the year. Erika Jones picked up the win in relief.
Both schools will meet again on Sunday as action continues in the Rebel Spring Tournament.
