LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team scored nine of its 10 runs in the fourth inning to cruise to a 10-3 victory over Southern Utah at Eller Media Stadium on Friday.
The Rebels (13-13) took advantage of three errors in the inning by the Thunderbirds (11-6) and used five hits in the big inning. Morgan Bostwick started the fireworks with a single to right center. The Rebels picked up a second base runner when SUU mishandled a sacrifice bunt by Pauline Glenn. Then Wendy Godwin smacked a line drive into the right-center gap to score Bostwick, her second RBI double of the day.
Glenn came in to score shortly after on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Brittney Hillyer that put the Rebels up 3-1. UNLV tacked on two more on a bases-loaded single from Bridget Byrne which forced the T-Birds to replace starting pitcher Mandy Brown (3-4).
Two more hits closed out the inning for UNLV. Brittany Freight hammered an RBI single to center, and four batters later, Glenn hit a long double with the bases loaded to score three.
Up 10-1, the Rebels rested starter Jacqueline Kerrigan and brought in lefty Becky McDonald (1-1). McDonald surrendered a pair of runs in the fourth before settling down and tossing the final four innings to earn the victory.
Byrne, Freight and Godwin each ended the game with a pair of hits apiece.
The Rebels continue tournament play against Long Island on Friday night.
