LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team scored in four of six innings and Jacqueline Kerrigan struck out 10 as the Rebels topped Long Island 6-1 at Eller Media Stadium on Friday.
After battling through two scoreless innings, the Rebels finally drew first blood in the third. UNLV got three straight hits from Amber Campbell, Bridget Byrne and Brittany Freight to load the bases. Lisa Sampson hit into a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning, but Kacey Ellis was able to drive a run in with a ground ball to the left side of the infield.
The Rebels added a second run on a ground ball by Morgan Bostwick that scored Sampson, and avoided some trouble when Kacey Ellis escaped a pickle play on a fielding error.
Campbell earned her second hit of the day with two out in the next inning, then stole second and raced home on a Byrne single.
Another run came in the fifth after Kacey Ellis hit a ball over the outfield for a double. Christy Tennes came in to pinch run, and went to third on a sac bunt by Bostwick, then scored on a Pauline Glenn single.
Long Island finally broke up a shutout bid by Rebel starter Jacqueline Kerrigan, scoring an unearned run in the sixth on a single and a fielding error.
The Rebel offense was not yet finished, adding two more in the sixth. Campbell drew a leadoff walk and Byrne singled up the middle for her third hit of the game. Both runners scored easily on a long double to the left-center gap by Sampson.
The victory is the fourth straight for the Rebels, who meet 14th-ranked Oregon at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
