FULLERTON, Calif. - Trisha Tannahill hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead No. 20 Nebraska to an 8-0 victory over the UNLV softball team at the Kia Classic on Wednesday.
The Huskers (17-9) cruised after going ahead 3-0 on Tannahill's home run. The Rebels (16-15) collected just two hits and could not score against Nebraska ace pitcher Peaches James (12-4).
Nebraska added a pair of unearned runs in the second to post a 5-0 lead against Rebel starter Jacqueline Kerrigan (13-11). Despite allowing just two earned runs off the homer, Kerrigan pitched just two innings and took the loss.
UNLV got a nice effort from senior Kacey Ellis in relief. Ellis retired six of the first seven hitters she faced before getting roughed up a bit in the fifth. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Brittany Yolo pulled a hard shot down the right field line good for a triple that scored two. Yolo then came in to score the clinching run on a wild pitch.
Pauline Glenn hit a line drive up the middle in the second inning for the Rebels' first hit, but was erased on a double play. Amber Campbell bunted for a hit and stole second to represent the Rebels' best scoring chance in the game, but was stranded there to end the third.
UNLV returns to the Titan Softball Complex on Thursday morning for a matchup with No. 23 Arizona State. Gametracker will not be available for that game.
