FULLERTON, Calif. - The UNLV softball team dropped its second straight decision at the Kia Classic on Thursday, falling to No. 23 Arizona State 6-0.
The Sun Devils (28-13) got to UNLV (16-16) and starter Jacqueline Kerrigan (13-12) early with a first-inning home run by Phelan Wright that scored two.
In the second inning, ASU added three runs, using back-to-back singles and some poor defense by the Rebels.
On the other side, the Rebels couldn't do much with Sun Devil starter Desi Serrano (13-4). Serrano allowed only a first-inning single to Kacey Ellis before settling in to retire 11 straight.
UNLV finally found a second hit in the fifth inning, a line drive to left by Wendy Godwin. Godwin was not able to move past first, however, as Serrano forced a pop up before striking out her seventh batter of the game.
The Rebels' best scoring opportunity came in the sixth. Bridget Byrne slammed a hit up the middle, moved to second on a Joanna Jackson bunt, and was held at third on Ellis' second hit of the game. But with two out, ASU needed only a pop up by Morgan Bostwick to end the inning.
The Rebels slip to 0-2 in Pool A play at the Kia Classic. They will play again on Friday morning, when they will meet No. 4 Florida State at the Titan Softball Complex at 9:00 a.m.
