Men's Golf

16 And Counting

May 10, 2004

The No. 15 UNLV men's golf team has received an at-large bid to participate in the NCAA West Regional, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee announced Monday.

The Rebels earned a berth in the postseason field for the 16th consecutive year after being selected as the No. 7 seed in the west. They will face a talented field of 27 of the best teams in the West at the par-72, 7,683-yard Crosswater Course at Sunriver Resort, in Sunriver, Ore., from May 20-22.

"We're certainly pleased," head coach Dwaine Knight said. "It's a good opportunity for us to go back to Sunriver where we've had quite a bit of experience. We just played up there a couple of weeks ago and it's nice to be going back."

The Regional serves as a qualifier for the NCAA Championship. The top 10 teams and top two individuals from each of three Regionals will advance to the final, slated for June 1-4 at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.

The course for the East Regional is the same that the Rebels just completed their most recent tournament, the Mountain West Conference Championship. In fact, UNLV has competed in the last four MWC Tournaments at the Crosswater Course.

UNLV has three victories at the NCAA West Regional. The Rebels won the national qualifier in 1990, 1994 and 1997, and have failed to advance to the national finals only once in school history.
