FORT COLLINS, Colo. - UNLV softball players Lisa Sampson and Pauline Glenn were chosen to the All-Mountain West Conference Softball Team, the league announced Wednesday.
Sampson, a senior from Fairfield, Calif., led the Rebels in hitting in MWC games with a .386 average. She is the reigning MWC Player of the Week after leading UNLV to wins in three of four games last week, going 7-for-9 a the plate. She started 58 games in centerfield and hit .329 for the year.
Glenn, a junior from Tucson, Ariz., hit .345 in league games and smacked a pair of home runs. On the season as a whole, she leads the squad with four dingers and owns a .264 average. The honor is a repeat for Glenn, who earned All-MWC kudos as a freshman in 2002.
Snubbed from the 20-player team was the Rebels' top hitter Bridget Byrne. Byrne, who leads the league with 72 hits and ranks second with a .379 batting average, was penalized by a poor system instituted by the conference which evaluates a player's performance based only on league games.
The Rebels (25-34, 7-13) open play in the Mountain West Conference Tournament against fourth-seeded Utah on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. MDT
