Box Score

LAS VEGAS - UNLV scored twice in the second half and held off a late charge by Long Island to win its first game of the year, 3-2 over the Blackbirds in collegiate women's soccer action on Monday night from Peter Johann Field. Both teams evened their records at 1-1.

The Rebels took an early advantage 8:55 into the game, when freshman forward Katie Carney collected a rebounded shot by Annii Magliulo, shot the ball, hit the cross bar, and then headed in her own miss for her first career goal and a 1-0 UNLV lead. That would be the only score of the first half, as the Rebels held a commanding 13-2 edge on shots.

Long Island started to attack more in the second half, and would tie the game at the 55:18 mark when Allison Andreano collected a pass from Jackie McCormick and slotted a shot into the right post from five yards out. UNLV quickly answered back however, as Blynnda Bascones sent a high curving shot from 20 yards out towards the goal, and saw the ball sail into the top left corner just above Blackbird goalkeeper Stephanie Kansky's hands for a 2-1 Rebel advantage.

UNLV added another goal at 65:25, when Carney drove down the right side and found Magliulo alone in the box. Magluilo then passed to Heather Killoch on the right side of the box, and she nailed a blast into the top right corner for a 3-1 lead. Long Island would fight back and cut the lead to 3-2, as Nichole Lopez headed in a Alison Dixon free kick at 77:08, but the Rebel defense held strong to earn the one-goal victory.

UNLV goalie Jenna Huff finished with five saves and two goals allowed, while Kansky posted 10 saves and three goals allowed. The Rebels held a 24-8 edge on shots for the game.

Next up for Rebels is the UNLV FILA Classic. Montana and Kent State will face off at 4:30 pm on Friday, with the Rebels taking on Northern Arizona at 7 pm. UNLV will then play Montana on Sunday at Noon, while Kent State and Northern Arizona will play at 2:30 pm. All games will be played at the Peter Johann Field.
