Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Mike Chabala had a hand in the first two goals of the game to lift No. 18 Washington past UNLV 3-0 in the second game of the UNLV FILA Men's Soccer Invitational on Friday night at Peter Johann Field. In the first game of the day, No. 13 Creighton scored three first-half goals to hold off sixth-ranked UCLA 3-2.

Scoring chances were few in the beginning of the UNLV (1-2) -Washington (3-1) contest, but the Huskies would take a 1-0 advantage at the 37:25 mark on a Chabala penalty kick after a foul in the box. Washington then opened the second half with a quick strike, as Kevin Forrest headed in Chabala's throw-in from the right sideline for a 2-0 Washington lead at 46:04. The Huskies sealed the game with a score at the 66:07 mark, when Casey Armstrong drove down the right side on a breakaway after receiving a pass from Ely Allen, and sent a blast towards goal that just managed to get through UNLV goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe for the final 3-0 score.

Huskie goalie Chris Eylander posted his third shutout of the season while finishing with three saves. Clitheroe tallied three saves in 79 minutes of action.

In the first game of the day, Creighton (3-0) blazed out to a 3-0 halftime lead, and then withstood a UCLA (2-1) rally that notched two scores in the final six minutes of the game. The Bluejays got on the board right from the start, when Vince Odorisio's cross to the left side of the box was deflected by a UCLA defender right into the back of the net just 26 seconds into the contest. Creighton took a 2-0 lead when Jarod Tarver moved inside the Bruin defense in the box, collected a pass from Joan Carajal, and placed a shot to the left post at the 10:24 mark. Brett Rodriguez closed out the scoring in the half, as Jonathan Welsh's cross found him just outside the goal on the left side, and he chipped in a shot from five yards out for a 3-0 lead. UCLA finally answered back when Richard Flores headed in a cross from Chad Barrett at the 83:59 mark, and Benny Feilhaber sent a blast down the middle for the Bruins' second score with 23 seconds left, but Creighton held on for the one-goal victory.

UNLV will face UCLA on Sunday on the second day of the UNLV FILA Invitational with a Noon start, while Creighton and Washington will play at 2:30 pm. All games are played at Peter Johann Field.
