Rebels Looking For Fourth Home Win

Sept. 23, 2004

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's soccer team, which is off to one of its best starts in the program's history, returns to action on Friday as they play their first home game in three weeks against San Diego. That will be followed by a road trip to in-state rival Nevada, Reno for a Sunday 2 pm contest. The game against San Diego on Friday, set for 7 pm at Peter Johann Field, is also marked as "Break the record attendance day", with kids 12 and under receiving free admission.

The Rebels dropped their first game of the year 2-0 to Kansas (currently ranked eighth in the nation), but rebounded to post four straight wins and had a five-game unbeaten streak until falling at No. 7 Tennessee this past Sunday 3-0. Its been a team effort for UNLV, as nine players have combined to score the Rebels' 11 goals this season. Leading the team is freshman Jessica Destito and junior Jessica Brown, both with a pair of goals, and both have been named MWC Offensive Player of the Week this season. Jenna Huff continues to shine in goal, as she holds a 1.08 goals against average and is first in the conference with 40 saves (5.71 per game).

San Diego is 4-4 on the year, though the Toreros are 0-3 on the road, and have yet to score on an opponent's field this season. They are led by Amy Epsten, who has six of the team's 15 goals this year, while Michelle Rowe and Marie-Claude Henry both have two scores. Karen Cook has seen the majority of time in goal, and has a 1.45 goals against average along with 31 saves.

Nevada, Reno is 1-6 on the season, having broken a six-game losing streak in its last game, a 1-0 win over Utah State on Sept. 17. The Wolf Pack have struggled to score this season, as they have just four goals this season while allowing 20 from their opponents. Annie Baxter has two of the scores for UNR this season to pace the team. Megan Tarpenning has seen the majority of time in goal, and has a 2.87 goals against average and 33 saves for the season.
