LAS VEGAS - UNLV freshman forward Katie Carney scored her second career goal in the 80th minute to lift the Rebels past San Diego 2-1 in women's collegiate soccer action on Friday night from Peter Johann Field. With the win, UNLV moves to 5-2-1 on the season, while San Diego fell to 4-5.
The Rebels got on the scoreboard early in the first half, as Annii Magliulo found Nickie Olson all alone on the left side of the box. Olson calmly settled the pass and then blasted a shot to the left corner for a 1-0 UNLV lead at the 10:01 mark. It looked like the Rebels would take that lead into halftime, but with just 11 seconds left in the half, Shannon Sullivan headed in Vanessa Vella's corner kick to knot the score at 1-1.
Though San Diego held a 9-2 edge on shots in the first half, it was a more even game in the second stanza, with the Toreros holding an 8-7 edge (17-9 for the game). It would be the Rebels that would break through in the half however, when Carney collected a loose ball in the box, and her shot from 15 yards out found the back of the net for a 2-1 Rebel lead at 79:53.
UNLV goalie Jenna Huff finished with seven saves, including two outstanding saves that shots from San Diego players that had broken away from their defenders. Karen Cook posted two three saves for the Toreros.
The Rebels will return to action this Sunday, as they take on in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Sunday at 2 pm in Reno.
