SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Drew McAthy and Neil Jones both scored a pair of goals to carry second-ranked UC Santa Barbara (8-0) past UNLV (1-6) 4-0 in collegiate men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Harder Stadium.
The Gauchos put the game away in the first half after scoring a blistering three goals in a three and a half minute span. McAthy scored his first goal at the 19:11 mark after Greg Curry crossed the ball into the box, and Jones tapped a pass to McAthy to set up the shot. Two minutes later, McAthy put USCB up 2-0 after heading in Matt Bly's cross at 21:23.
Bly assisted on the next score as well, sending a cross over to McAthy who attempted a bicycle kick that was off target, but Jones headed in the shot for the 3-0 advantage at 22:49. Jones closed out the score at 57:45, taking a pass up the middle from Tino Nunez and beating UNLV goalie Matt Johnson to the corner for the fourth goal of the game.
Peter Clitheroe started in goal for UNLV, and finished with one save and three goals allowed in 42 minutes, while Johnson allowed one goal in 48 minutes of action. Dan Kennedy made five saves for UCSB.
The Rebels return to action on Sunday, Oct. 3, as they will take on New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., at 1 pm.
