LAS VEGAS - Adam Carey has been named assistant coach for the UNLV men's tennis team, Rebel head coach Owen Hambrook announced Thursday.

Carey, 23, is a former professional and college player who becomes the men's program's first assistant since the 2003 season.

"For someone his age, Adam Carey brings a lot of experience to the program," Hambrook said. "He has competed at the highest level of college tennis and earned valuable experience on the pro level as well as starting a promising coaching career."

A standout player and former co-captain at the University of Tennessee from 1999-2002, Carey was ranked in the nation's top 20 in singles in 2000 and '01 and top 10 in doubles those same seasons.

A native of Australia, Carey was voted the 2002 Southeastern Conference Tournament MVP and competed in one NCAA singles tournament and two doubles championships as a Vol.

A 2003 graduate of the school, Carey already lists a substantial coaching resume. He spent the 2004 season as the assistant at The Citadel Military College in Charleston, S.C., and has served as a volunteer teaching pro at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
