Las Vegas - San Jose State defeated UNLV in three straight games, 30-23, 32-30 and 30-27. With the win, the Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season while the Rebels evened their record at 1-1. UNLV beat Washington State earlier in the day 3-2 in the Rebels' opening match of the season. After hitting at a high percentage in their season opener, the Rebels couldn't get their offense on track against the Spartans. UNLV hit .096 as a team, with three players having negative attacking percentages. Maria Aladjova led the Rebels with 16 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Miramontes, playing in her first match of the season, joined Aladjova in double figures with 12 kills. Freshman setter Marisa Okamoto had 39 assists for UNLV. Leading the Spartans were Carrie Nash and Sarah Christensen, who both finsihed the match with 12 kills. San Jose State had a balanced offense, as four other players shared 23 kills, keeping the UNLV defense off-balance throughout most of the match. Both the Rebels and the Spartans will be back in action Saturday, as the UNLV Classic concludes. San Jose State plays Washington State at 10 am in the Cox Pavilion. UNLV then closes the Classic by playing Washington State again at 5 pm.
