Shutout Streak Now Five

FORTH WORTH, Texas - Junior midfielder Lisa Sternberg scored the lone goal of the game in the ninth minute, and UNLV posted its school-record fifth straight shutout in a 1-0 victory over TCU in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Friday afternoon. The Rebels, 8-4-3 overall, stayed in a tie for first place in the league with Utah at 3-0 in league play. The Horned Frogs, coached by former UNLV coach Dan Abdalla, fell to 5-7, 0-3 in MWC play.

UNLV dominated the play on the field the entire game, holding a 21-8 edge on shots, and allowed just one TCU shot on goal all game, none in the second half. The Rebels also held a 12-1 edge on corner kicks, which came into effect in the winning score. Katie Carney sent a corner kick into the box that was headed in by Sternberg for the score at 8:07. It was the second time Sternberg has scored this season off a Carney corner kick.

TCU goalkeeper Katy Buchanan played a strong game, recording nine saves to keep the Horned Frogs within striking distance, but the UNLV defense would not break down. Rebel goalkeeper Jenna Huff was forced to make just one save on the day as she earned her second straight shutout, increasing her school career shutout record to 22. The Rebels also extended to 450 minutes their streak of not allowing a goal, also a new school record.

The Rebels play their last road game of the regular season on Sunday, at New Mexico in Albuquerque at 11 am (PST).
