LAS VEGAS - Two days after she was named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, UNLV's Nickie Olson was named to both Soccer America's and Soccer Buzz's Team of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday. She becomes the first Rebel to ever earn national honors twice in the same week, and it's her third of the season, as she was selected to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week on Oct. 5 as well. Olson is the second Rebel to ever earn Soccer America honors, and the first to be recognized by Soccer Buzz.
Olson, a Las Vegas (Centennial) native, has been a big key in the Rebels' back four that has recorded the nation's longest active shutout streak at six. The senior defender helped UNLV dominate TCU on the field, holding the Horned Frogs to just one shot on goal in a 1-0 win on Friday in Fort Worth, Texas. In a 2-0 win over New Mexico, Olson contributed on offense as well, scoring her third goal of the year in the 58th minute to help the Rebels to their sixth straight win. It was also their sixth straight shutout win in conference play dating back to the 2004 season, breaking the previous record of five set by San Diego State
The Rebels (9-4-3, 4-0 MWC), riding a school-record six-game win streak, will play its final three regular season games at home, beginning with a home contest against No. 16 BYU on Thursday night at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
