LAS VEGAS - An unfortunate deflection by a UNLV defender was the difference in the game, helping 12th-ranked BYU escape with a 1-0 victory in a key Mountain West Conference women's soccer contest on Thursday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Cougar goal snapped the Rebels' six-game shutout streak, which had been the longest streak in the nation. It also brought UNLV (9-5-3) down into a tie with BYU (15-1-1) for second place in the league at 4-1 in MWC play.

Though BYU controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, and held a 10-4 edge on shots, the Rebel defense limited them to mostly shots from outside that were wide off the mark. UNLV began the second half with a great scoring opportunity, as Jessica Destito was able to race past the Cougar defenders and collect a ball 10 yards in front of the goal, with just the goalie to beat. With a defender right on her heels, Destito was forced to a quick shot, and the ball was high over the net.

The winning score would come in the 64th minute, courtesy of Carolyn Swenson, who found herself alone with the ball down on the left baseline. She moved to her right and quickly sent a low shot to the middle of the goal that UNLV goalkeeper Jenna Huff was in perfect position to stop. However, a Rebel defender moved in front of the ball and attempted to clear the shot, but instead the ball deflected off her leg to the left. Huff was unable to recover and readjust to the ball, and it just barely sneaked in the left corner past Huff for the Cougar score at 63:07.

UNLV pressured BYU the rest of the game looking for the tying goal, but could not get a clean shot off against Cougar goalkeeper Erika Woodbury, who posted four saves to earn the shutout. Woodbury has allowed just four goals all season for the Cougars.

BYU finished with a 13-7 edge on shots, though both teams had three shots apiece in the second half, and the Cougars had just four on goal. Huff, whose scoreless streak was stopped at 468 minutes, finished with three saves for the Rebels.

The Rebels will now get ready to host first place Utah (5-0 in MWC play) on Saturday at 1 pm at Peter Johann Field.
