After seeing its chance at a second straight regular season championship fall after 1-0 losses to BYU and Utah last week, the UNLV women's soccer team (9-6-3, 4-2) still face a key game against San Diego State in their Senior Day regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Not only does UNLV want to end the regular season on a winning note, they still have a chance at finishing second in the conference standings, if they can earn a win over SDSU on Saturday, and first place Utah wins or ties second place BYU.
Earning the second seed can make a huge difference in the conference tournament, as whoever finishes third will most likely face New Mexico in the opening round, a dangerous team that is the only team to have beaten 15th-ranked BYU this season (the Cougars have two ties). The Rebels will also have another advantage in the tournament, as they are hosting the Mountain West Conference Tournament for the third time, from Nov. 2-5 at Peter Johann Field.
Though the Aztecs hold a 6-3 edge in the all-time series between the two schools, the favor has definitely been in the Rebels favor recently. Beginning with a 1-0 win over SDSU to end the 2003 season, UNLV has won the last three meetings between the schools, including last year's 3-0 win at San Diego that clinched the 2004 MWC regular season title for the Rebels.
The game will also be the final regular season home game for UNLV's five seniors, Jessica Brown, Jenna Huff, Angie Inzana, Nickie Olson, and Lori Sakai.
