LAS VEGAS - Thanks to two goals by junior forward Tanya Roberts, UNLV posted a 3-0 win over San Diego State to finish in second place in the regular season standings on the Rebels' Senior Day in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
After being picked fourth in the conference preseason poll, the Rebels won their fifth league game of the year, all shutout victories, to post a 5-2 MWC record, ahead of third-place BYU (4-1-2). UNLV (10-6-3) will be the second seed in the 2005 MWC Tournament, hosted at UNLV from Nov. 2-5. The Rebels will meet seventh-seeded TCU, coached by former UNLV head coach Dan Abdalla, on Wednesday at 7 pm in the quarterfinals at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Roberts scored the eventual game-winner in the 11th minute. Nickie Olson started the play by sending a pass high into the box from 30 yards out, and Roberts headed the ball in from the middle of the box to the left corner of the goal for the 1-0 Rebel lead. UNLV added to the lead in the 28th minute, following a San Diego State (10-8-2, 2-3-2) foul. Katie Carney took the insuring free kick from the left side, and kicked a perfect cross into the box, which was headed in by Haley Partridge for her first career score. The final score came in the second half, again from Roberts. With the Rebels pushing the ball up the field, Erica Frizzell crossed a pass over the box to find Roberts unmarked on the left side, and she blasted a shot to the left post for the 3-0 Rebel lead in the 78th minute.
UNLV goalkeeper Jenna Huff finished with three saves to earn her fourth solo shutout of the season, and 24th in her career. The Rebels finished with a 15-7 edge on shots, and held the Aztecs to just three shots on goal. UNLV also posted a 6-1 edge on corner kicks. Cat Burson finished with three saves and three goals allowed for the Aztecs.
