COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomore forward Jessica Destito scored twice in the second half to lead UNLV to a 2-0 win at Air Force on Friday afternoon in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action. In the conference opener for both teams, the Rebels held the host Falcons to just six shots, and just one on goal in the victory, which improved them to 6-4-3 on the season.
It was the third straight shutout for UNLV, extending to 270 minutes its streak of not allowing a goal, and they have outscored their last three opponents by a 9-0 margin. It is also the fifth straight conference win for the defending champion Rebels, dating back to last season. Air Force dropped to 4-9-1 with the loss, 0-1 in league play.
Tanya Roberts was credited with assists on both of Destito's goals. She set up the first score by sending a pass from midfield, and Destito took it down before blasting a shot from 20 yards out to the top left corner in the 52nd minute. The two hooked up on a scoring play again in the 84th minute, as again Roberts feed Destito streaking down the left side with a pass, and then time Destito chipped a shot to the right corner for the goal. The two Destito scores marked the third time this year a Rebel has scored two goals in a game.
For the third straight game, Ciera Nero and Jenna Huff split time in goal to earn the team shutout. Nero played the first half and collected one save, while Huff earned her first victory of the year. Air Force's Jennifer Drew finished with seven saves and two goals allowed in 90 minutes of action.
The Rebels remain on the road as they take on Wyoming on Sunday at Noon (PST) in Laramie.
