LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's soccer team learned Monday afternoon their first round opponent in this year's NCAA Tournament will be Cal State Fullerton, as the 2005 selections for the 64-team tournament were announced. The Rebels, who won the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship this past Saturday with a 1-0 overtime win over New Mexico in Las Vegas, will take on the third-seeded and 17th ranked Titans at 7:30 pm (PST) at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. Southern Cal and Gonzaga, the other two teams in the Cal State Fullerton regional, will play in the first game at 5 pm, while Friday's two winners will meet on Sunday in the second round at 1 pm.
UNLV, which set a new school record with its 13th win of the season on Saturday, brings a 13-6-3 mark into this year's postseason tournament. The Rebels finished second in the MWC with a 5-2 mark, but posted wins over TCU (3-0), San Diego State (2-1 in OT), and New Mexico to win their first-ever conference tournament title. They have also set new school records this season for longest win streak (six games) and most shutouts in a season (currently at 11).
UNLV is playing in the NCAAs for the second straight year, the first though with an automatic bid, as the Rebels were an at-large bid in 2004. They fell to San Diego 1-0 in overtime in their first round game in the UCLA Regional.
The Rebels have met Cal State Fullerton in women's soccer twice before, taking a 3-2 win in Las Vegas on Sept. 19, 1999, and a 3-1 win in Fullerton on Aug. 25 to open the 2000 season.
