Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - For the second time today UNLV let a win slip away at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. After playing into the early hours of Sunday morning, the Rebels (5-3) returned to Eller Media Stadium for a newly scheduled matchup against Oklahoma State (5-4). The Rebels took a one run lead into the top of the seventh but for the second-straight game, the visitors were able to take snatch a win away from the host.
After four and a half scoreless innings of play the Rebels were able to break the deadlock with a run in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Marissa Nichols singled to right field. Nichols advanced to third on a wild pitch and moved to third with her third stolen base of the game. Caitlyn Paus singled through the right side to plate Nichols and put the Rebels up 1-0.
For the third-straight game the Rebels only put one run on the scoreboard and for the second night in a row one run wasn't enough for the win.
Oklahoma State's Marjorie Johnson (4-2) kept the Cowgirls in the game and the Rebels' bats at bay with her three hit, 12 strikeout performance. Johnson posted at least one strikout in every inning, except for the fifth.
The Cowgirls only registered three hits through the first six innings and left the bases loaded in the sixth. The Rebel defense held up and got Jacque Kerrigan (5-3) out of the inning.
In the seventh, OSU struck for four runs with only the tying run counting as an earned run. A double to right started off the inning and a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third. A two-walk followed and put a runner on first base. The tying run scored on a single to third base. A batted ball to UNLV shortstop Danielle Martinez was misplayed and allowed for the winning run to score. Two more runners crossed home on a single hit up the middle.
Next up for the Rebels is a 6:30 pm scheduled game against Central Florida.
