PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Texas A&M (16-1), #19 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll and coming off an upset victory of #1 California, made the most out of its opportunities against UNLV (10-7) Saturday night at the Palm Springs Classic at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City, Calif. The Rebels were held hitless until Brittany Meade broke up Amanda Scarborough's (8-0) bid for a perfect game/no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth. Meade recorded both of UNLV's two hits in the game and extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Scarborough faced 24 batters in the game, three over the minimum in a seven-inning game and kept the Rebels scoreless for the first time this season.
Jacque Kerrigan (8-6) struck out nine Aggies in six innings of work, while taking the loss. Texas A&M scattered nine hits in the game, eight of which came off of Kerrigan. Kerrigan held the Aggies at bay, until they were finally able to plate runners they put on the base paths.
A&M put runners on the bases in every inning, but only capitalized in the fifth and sixth innings. Kerrigan was able to withstand the Aggie runners early in the game and left them stranded until they were able to string together four singles for three runs in the fifth.
Kerrigan recorded three strikeouts in the fifth, but the final one came after the damage was done. A&M lead off the inning with a single and had its next two hitters fanned by Kerrigan. Three two-out singles followed to score three runs.
In the top of the sixth, Rocky Spencer cranked a homer to left field for the Aggies fourth and final run of the game.
UNLV plays their fifth and final game of the Palm Springs Classic Sunday against Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m.
