Tribal Tennis Meeting Produces William & Mary Win

March 12, 2005

LAS VEGAS - The 30th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team came out firing in doubles competition but could not overcome the powerful singles lineup of No. 7 William & Mary as the Tribe posted a 5-2 win at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.

The Lady Rebels fell to 6-3 overall -- with two losses coming in the last three days vs. top 25 opponents -- while the Tribe improved to 10-1.

UNLV was flattened in doubles one day earlier in a win over No. 57 Penn but this time stunned the visitors, who boasted two ranked duos, by taking two of three for a 1-0 lead. First, the Lady Rebel duo of Elena Gantcheva and Mery Constanti won easily on court three, 8-2, and then Gyorgyi Zsiros and Claire Smith upset No. 30 Megan Muth and Amy Wei at the second position, 8-4, to secure the point. Zsiros and Smith improved to 7-1 in dual matches this season as the team upped its overall doubles record to 26-15.

William & Mary rallied in singles play, however, winning five of six matches. Megan Moulton-Levy, ranked 36th nationally, handed No. 29 freshman Elena Gantcheva her first-ever loss in a dual match with the 6-4, 6-4 final. Gantcheva fell to 23-3 overall and 7-1 in dual action. UNLV's only victory came at the fifth spot where Smith rolled over Kate Boomershine 6-2, 6-0. Zsiros fell at No. 2 to Lena Sherbakov, 6-4, 6-3, Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis was beaten by No. 90 Candice Fuchs 6-2, 6-1 on court three, Cindy Treber played three sets before falling to No. 64 Muth, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Linda Tempelfelde lost 7-6, 6-0 at No. 6 by Lingda Yang.

"It was great to see us come out and play so well in doubles," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "William and Mary is a top-10 team and was just too strong in singles. Now we'll get ready for another big match this week."

UNLV hosts No. 27 Indiana on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m.
