Final Stats
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Stanford (23-4) used timely hitting and solid pitching to end UNLV's (23-12) seven-game winning streak. The Cardinal blanked the Rebels 3-0 in the finale and subsequent championship game of the Stanford Invitational. Both teams finished with a 4-1 record in the three-day event.
The Cardinal's Becky McCullough (6-0) was perfect until the fifth, when an error on a batted ball to the short stop was mishandled. McCullough sustained the no-hit bid through five as Valerie Keeney began the top of the sixth with a single.
The sixth inning was the only inning that UNLV mustered any offensive threat. Following Keeney's single, Amber Campbell reached on a fielder's choice, but Keeney was thrown out at second. Marissa Nichols extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a single up the middle. The hit advanced Campbell to second. Brittany Freight moved both runners into scoring position with a ground out to the third baseman. The Rebels' opportunity ended with a ground out to third by Caitlyn Paus.
UNLV dodged Stanford's first scoring attack in the second by recording the third out with two Cardinal runners left at second and third after a leadoff walk and a double to open the inning.
Stanford used three-consecutive singles off Jacque Kerrigan (15-11) in the third to put the first run on the scoreboard.
The Cardinal added two insurance runs in the fifth with an RBI-triple following a single and a sacrifice fly to left field.
