Final Stats
FRESNO, Calif. - After game one played out to a 1-0 final, game two at Bulldog Diamond was far from the same. UNLV (30-15) and 18th-ranked Fresno State (27-9) plated 15 runs combined in the nightcap, with the visiting Rebels scoring a season-high 13 runs in the 13-2 run-ruled five inning rout. Each team scored two runs in the first inning, but the Rebels played fetch with the Bulldogs and scored nine runs on five scattered hits in the third. UNLV closed out the scoring with two more in the fifth.
UNLV put two runs across in the first with help from a sac fly and a throwing error on the same play. Marissa Nichols singled through the right side to open things up on Amanda Nesbitt (6-5). With one out, Caitlyn Paus doubled to right field to move Nichols to third. Brittany Meade hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Nichols. Paus advanced to third on the play and came home when Daisy Gaynor's throw from right field got past Nichole Willis at the plate.
Fresno State evened things up with two runs of its own with help from two Rebel errors. The Bulldogs got back-to-back singles after Jacque Kerrigan (19-13) got the first batter out. A ground out to first advanced the runner with two outs. A fielding error and a throwing error on the following play by Morgan Bostwick allowed two runs to tie things up.
After leaving the bases loaded in the second, UNLV came out firing once again in the third. Meade began the inning with a single up the middle. Maggie Livreri walked to put two runners on. Pauline Glenn reached on a fielder's choice hit to third. With the bases loaded and one out, Morgan Bostwick made up for her previous errors by hitting a ball to Christina Clark at short. Clark mishandled the ball and allowed Meade to score. With two out, Nichols singled to left to bring Glenn home. Valerie Keeney ended Nesbitt's night with a two-run single to center field.
The new pitcher, Laura Ferreira, didn't have it any easier. Paus singled off the new hurler and advanced to second after a throw home to get Nichols was unsuccessful. Meade walked to load the bases for Maggie Livreri. Livreri made the Bulldogs pay with her second grand slam of the year. Livreri's shot cleared the left field fence.
With a nine-run lead, Kerrigan had smooth sailing from there on out. Kerrigan allowed four hits in the game and only one after the Rebels big inning.
In the fifth, Paus recorded her second double of the game and came home on Brittany Meade's second home run of the season. Meade's homer sailed over the left center field fence. The home run chased Ferreira from the game and brought in Amanda Wolf to finish out the game.
The win closes out UNLV's non-conference schedule. In non-conference games, the Rebels are 24-13. With Fresno State holding the #18 spot in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25, UNLV has faced 12 ranked teams and holds a 4-8 mark in those games.
