LAS VEGAS - For the third time this softball season, UNLV has swept the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors. Maggie Livreri and Jacque Kerrigan were chosen Tuesday as the recipients of the awards due to their actions last week against nationally ranked Fresno State and conference foe, San Diego State. The selection is the first for Livreri, while Kerrigan has been awarded three times in 2005 and seven times overall in her career. Kerrigan ties Amie Stewart (1994) and Lori Harrigan (1989) as the only pitchers in UNLV history to be honored three times in a single season.
Livreri hit for a .300 average in four games for the Rebels this past week, including two grand slams. On the week, she batted in eight RBI and scored two runs, with a slugging percentage of .900 and an on-base percentage of .417. On the road against 18th-ranked Fresno State, Livreri went 2-for-5 with a grand slam in the Rebels 13-2 game two upset victory over the Bulldogs. In addition to her grand slam, she was walked twice to add to her team-best 23 on the season. Just like game two at Fresno, Livreri came up large in the second game of the San Diego State doubleheader this past Saturday. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Livreri turned her fifth home run of the year into her third grand slam, as well. She was perfect behind the plate with 11 putouts and two assists. On the season, Livreri is batting .279 with 28 RBI.
Kerrigan recorded a 3-1 mark in four complete game starts last week for the Rebels. She recorded a 13-2 victory at 18th-ranked Fresno State and two more against San Diego State at home. In her 25.0 innings in the circle, she struck out 11 batters, while giving up one earned run (three total), 14 hits and three walks. In her game two victory in Fresno, she gave up four hits and struck out two, while walking none. Against San Diego State, Kerrigan tossed her fourth and fifth shutouts of the season in UNLV's 2-0 and 4-0 wins. In game one, she carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning only to lose it to the first batter. She finished the game with a one-hitter and two strikeouts. In the nightcap, Kerrigan surrendered six hits, with three strikeouts and no walks awarded. With her three victories, Kerrigan moved into UNLV's all-time wins list with 65. She is currently 21-13 on the year, with 154 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.70.
On the year, UNLV has won seven of the 11 weekly player of the week awards. More closely, the Rebels have take seven of the last nine. From the circle, Kerrigan has taken three of the 10 pitcher selections. For the week of March 15, no pitcher was chosen.
