April 3, 2005

Final Stats

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - UNLV (25-13, 2-1 MWC) took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but two costly errors came back to haunt the Rebels and sent the game into extra innings. The Rebels rebounded and scored one in the top of the eighth for a 3-2 win over Colorado State (24-11, 2-1 MWC) in Fort Collins, Colo. Jacque Kerrigan (17-11) took the win, while tossing her 15th complete game of the season and recording seven strikeouts.

Maggie Livreri put the Rebels on the board early with a two-out double to right center. The base knock brought Caitlyn Paus and Brittany Meade in for a 2-0 lead. Paus singled to right to get things started and Meade followed by getting hit for the fifth time on the season.

After the opening scores by UNLV, zeroes were put up on the scoreboard until the Rams final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. CSU had its opportunities to score, but left runners in scoring position in five of the eight innings. Runners were stranded at third base two times.

The Rams used the Rebels inability to catch fly balls to their advantage as they tied the game up with two unearned runs in the inning. Brittany Burtner got things going as she hit a fly down the right field line that was dropped by Valerie Keeney. Burtner wound up at third base on the play. Lauren Cusick brought Burtner home with a sacrifice foul out to left. Following the second out of the inning, Stephanie Roberts hit a shot that Pauline Glenn was unable to field at third. Jennifer Gardner followed with a fly ball to center that Brittany Freight mishandled for the second error of the inning. Gardner was thrown out trying to advance to third, but the third out wasn't recorded until Roberts tied the game with the second run of the inning.

Freight redeemed herself with a single to left to start the extra frame. Paus pushed Freight into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt to the third baseman. Meade singled to right to put runners at first and third with one out. Freight came home to score the go-ahead run on an error to third hit by Morgan Bostwick.

Kerrigan sent the meat (3-4-5 hitters) of the Ram's batting lineup down on a looking strikeout, a pop up and a ground out.

Up next for the Rebels is a 3 p.m. game two of Sunday's scheduled doubleheader against CSU.
