April 9, 2005

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - Just like Saturday's game one of the UNLV (27-14, 4-2 MWC) and BYU (25-9, 5-1) doubleheader, the first team to six wins in game two get the victory. In game one, BYU won 6-5. UNLV hit the six run marker first to hand BYU its first Mountain West Conference loss. Shannon Crisp (9-1) picked up her second-consecutive MWC win in the 6-5 affair. Crisp threw 6.2 innings before handing off to Jacque Kerrigan for her third save of the season.

BYU took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with help from a two-out walk issued by Crisp. Jenn Whiteley took the free pass and came around to score on Jodi Norton's double to center field.

It took an inning later for UNLV to respond against BYU starter Daniella Urincho. In the bottom of the third, Marissa Nichols walked with one out. Caitlyn Paus singled down the left field line and advanced Nichols to second. Brittany Meade loaded the bases with a walk. Maggie Livreri followed with a hit to the short stop that was misplayed by Norton. Norton wanted to force Meade out at second, but was unsuccessful as the ball got away from her attempt to field it. Nichols and Paus both scored on the error. Meade and Livreri moved up a base on a wild pitch. Morgan Bostwick walked to load the bases. Brooke Boyce (7-3) came in to get the final out of the inning.

The Cougars hit three home runs in game one and followed that power display with two more in game two. Ashlyn Russell hit her second shot of the day with one out in the fourth.

UNLV traded the home run for three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles by Rosa Ordaz and Valerie Keeney put runners at first and second for Nichols. Nichols walked to load the bases. Paus singled to third and brought in the first run of the inning. Meade followed with a single to left that fell in front of Krystle Chamberlain. Meade's hit scored two on the play and chased Boyce from the game after she recorded only two outs in the game. Niki Anderson relieved Boyce to get the final two outs.

Each team put a run up in the sixth. BYU got a homer from Neta Le'i, while UNLV countered with Nichols 11th home run of the season. Nichols went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored.

Jacque Kerrigan picked up her third save when she came in to record the final out of the game after Crisp allowed two walks. The sun became a factor in the inning when Keeney lost a fly ball that dropped in front of her in right. Le'i was credited with a double and two RBI on the play. Kerrigan got Russell to ground out to third to close out the contest.

Up next for UNLV is a doubleheader on Sunday, April 10 against Utah. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
