Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - Game one of UNLV's (26-14, 3-2 MWC) scheduled doubleheader against BYU (25-8, 5-0 MWC) started off badly for the host Rebels. In the Mountain West Conference home opener for the Rebels at Eller Media Stadium, BYU's Lauren Watson-Perry gave the Cougars a lead they would not surrender. Watson-Perry hit a home run down the right field line for a 1-0 lead and recorded four RBI in the game. Jacque Kerrigan (17-12) suffered the loss as she recorded her 600th career strikeout in the contest.

BYU added to its one run lead in the second inning with help from a lead off home run by Ashlyn Russell and three more off of errors. Following the homer, UNLV's defense was unable to catch the ball as three errors allowed for three more runs. A walk to Daniela Urincho put a runner on with no one out. Jenn Whitely popped up to Brittany Meade on a bunt. Meade dropped the bunt and it was ruled that it was touched in fair territory. Urincho took second on an error by Maggie Livreri as she tried to get her advancing. Meade dropped another pop up when Debbie Dodds hit a soft foul down the third base line. Dodds ended up walking to load the bases for Watson-Perry's second at-bat of the game. Watson-Perry tripled down the left field line to plate the three runners for a 5-0 lead.

UNLV chipped away at the lead with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Rosa Ordaz singled up the middle. Morgan Bostwick moved Ordaz to third with a double down that landed just past the third base bag and spun into foul territory. Valerie Keeney brought home UNLV's first run on a single through the right side. Dodds, the Cougars second baseman tried to field the ball, but it spun away from her. Dodds picked it up and tried to throw Bostwick out at home but the ball sailed up the line and got away from Watson-Perry.

In the fourth, the Rebels got another run back thanks to a run on two hits and an error. Meade walked and was replaced by Kahaunani Kahananui on the base paths. Livreri singled to center to push Kahananui to third. Kahananui was thrown out at home on Bostwick's at-bat. Bostwick tried to successfully bunt down the first base line, but the ball was fielded and thrown home in time to get the runner. Bostwick took second on the play. Livreri came in for the third Rebel run on an errant throw by Watson-Perry attempting to get Bostwick at second.

BYU wasn't done hitting balls out of the park, as Dodds cranked one to center in the sixth.

UNLV answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Meade doubled to right to open the inning. Britney Hillyer pinch-ran for Meade at second. Livreri walked to put runners at first and second. Ordaz hit one up the middle that short stop Jodi Norton mishandled and led to a bases loaded situation for UNLV. Hillyer scored when Bostwick grounded out into a double play.

Danielle Martinez pinch-hit to start the bottom of the seventh and made it count. Martinez hit her second home run of the season with a shot to straight-away center. Caitlyn Paus singled with two out to put the tying run on base, but Summer Tobias (12-4) was able to close out the game with a ground out by Pauline Glenn.
