TEMPE, Ariz. - The UNLV men's golf team captured the team title at the 33rd Annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday at the ASU Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,025 yards) by just two shots after firing a final-round 12-over-par 296.
It marked UNLV's second team title of the season and first ever at the Thunderbird Invitational.
UNLV (274-289-296--859, +7) led wire-to-wire, finishing at 7-over for the tournament, two shots ahead of Pepperdine (285-284-292--861, +9). Host Arizona State (286-287-296--669, +17) finished third, 10 shots back. Arizona (282-292-297--871, +19) and UCLA (290-289-294--873, +21) rounded out the top five.
Arizona's Kipp Riehle (69-69-68--206, -7), who was competing as an individual, shot a final-round 3-under 68 and won the individual crown at 7-under, six shots better than teammate Nathan Lashley (68-70-74--212, -1), who finished second. Lashley's total did count toward the Wildcats' team total.
Travis Whisman (67-73-74--214, +1) shot a final-round 3-over 74 and was the top Rebel at the event as he tied for sixth place at 1-over.
Other Rebel players were Andres Gonzales (68-73-74--215, +2; T11th), Ryan Keeney (72-70-73--215, +2; T11th), Jarred Texter (69-73-75--217, +4; T18th) and J.C. Deacon (70-74-78--222, +9; T34th).
The Rebels played without Ryan Moore as he is competing in the Masters.
UNLV is off until the Mountain West Conference Championships, which will be held April 28-30 in Sunriver, Ore.
