STANFORD, Calif. - The UNLV men's golf team shot a tournament-low 3-under-par 277 on Friday during the second round of the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course (par 70, 6,742 yards) and now lead the tournament by four shots heading into the final round.
The Rebels (281-277--558, -2) are the only team under par for the tournament as they sit at 2-under. BYU (278-284--562, +2), the first-round leader, is now in second place, four shots back.
New Mexico (284-284--568, +8) and Washington (286-282--568, +8) are tied for third at 8-over, while Pepperdine (279-292--571, +11) and Arizona State (290-281--571, +11) are tied for fifth.
UNLV is looking for its first NCAA West Regional championship since 1997 when it won at Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee, Calif. The Rebels have been fairly close since, finishing second or third five times in the last seven years (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003).
After shooting an opening-round 7-under 63 on Thursday, BYU's Oscar Alvarez (63-71--134, -6) shot 1-over 71 on Friday but still holds the individual lead at 6-under. There is a four-way tie for second place - four shots off the lead - that includes UNLV's Ryan Moore (69-69--138, -2) after the senior shot back-to-back rounds of 1-under 69.
Andres Gonzales (70-69--139, -1) and Ryan Keeney (71-68--139, -1) are also in the top 10 for UNLV as they are both tied for sixth place at 1-under.
Other Rebel players were: Travis Whisman (71-71--142, +2; T18th) and Jarred Texter (73-74--147, +7; T60th).
Play will conclude with 18 holes on Saturday. The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on to the championship finals June 1-4 in Owings Mills, Md.
