OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The UNLV men's golf team shot a 10-over-par 290 during the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships on Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club (par 70, 7,131 yards) and is tied for fifth place with a two-round total of 14-over 574.
UNLV (284-290--574, +14) is 16 shots behind team-leading Georgia (274-284--558, -2), which is the only team in the field under par, after shooting a 4-over 284 on Thursday.
Tennessee (279-288--567, +7) shot an 8-over 288 during the second round and sits in second place at 7-over. Georgia Tech (288-281--569, +9) shot the low round of the second day at 1-over and is in third place, 9-over par. Southern California (290-282--572, +12) is fourth at 12-over.
UNLV is in a four-way tie for fifth place with Duke (288-286--574, +14), Georgia State (287-287--574, +14) and Washington (289-285--574, +14).
Pepperdine's Michael Putnam (67-67--134, -6) holds the individual lead at 6-under 134 after turning in two straight rounds of 3-under 67. Major Manning (65-70--135, -5) from Augusta State shot even par during the second round and is in second place at 5-under. There are 12 other golfers under par for the tournament.
Rebel freshman Jarred Texter (74-70--144, +4) was the low UNLV player on Thursday, firing an even-par 70, but he is 4-over for the tournament and tied for 37th. Andres Gonzales (70-73--143, +3) is tied for 31st at 3-over to lead UNLV.
After shooting an opening-round 1-under to lead the Rebels, Ryan Keeney (69-75--144, +4) shot 5-over on Thursday and is tied for 37th at 4-over. Defending NCAA individual champion Ryan Moore (72-73--145, +5) is tied for 48th at 5-over after shooting a second-round 3-over. Travis Whisman (73-74--147, +7) rounds out the Rebel players and is tied for 70th at 7-over.
Play continues with 18 holes on Friday and concludes with 18 more on Saturday.
