LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior golfer Andres Gonzales has been hot of late on the national amateur circuit including his recent victory at the Scratch Players Championship on Wednesday at the Bayonet Golf Club in Seaside, Calif.
Gonzales, who finished third on UNLV's squad last year in scoring average at 72.23 (31 rounds), shot 5-under 283 (67-71-71-74) to hold off incoming UNLV freshman Seung Su Han (72-68-70-74) by one stroke. The pair were two of just three golfers to finish under par at the event.
Gonzales also won medalist honors during stroke play at the Western Amateur in late July and finished second Aug. 5 at the Pacific Coast Amateur.
UNLV will begin the 2005-06 golf season on Sept. 16 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
