LAS VEGAS - Coming off one of its best weekend performances in the past several years, in which they pulled off a pair of upsets over ranked teams, the UNLV men's soccer team is looking to add to its win streak at the OSU Diadora Classic, hosted by Oregon State. The Rebels will meet the OSU Beavers on Friday at 3 pm, and then follow with a match against 25th-ranked Cal State Northridge on Saturday at 1 pm. Both games will be played at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium on the Oregon State campus.
The Rebels are 2-2 on the season, after going 2-0 in their own UNLV adidas Classic last weekend with wins over No. 23 Portland (2-1) and No. 15 Northwestern (2-1). Freshman midfielder Lamar Neagle scored once in both games to be named both conference player of the week and to Soccer America's Team of the Week. He currently is tied for first on the team in goals with two, along with senior forward Rod Dyachenko. In goal is senior Peter Clitheroe, who leads the MPSF with 20 saves, and has a 1.70 GAA.
Oregon State is 1-2-2 on the season, with its lone win coming over Iona. The Beavers have struggled to score this year, with just four goals over their five games. Five players have all scored once for OSU, while Alex Asai has one goal and a team-high two assists to lead the team with four points. In goal is Packy Deenihan, who has a 0.90 GAA and 28 saves.
Cal State Northridge is 3-0-1, and have dominated its opposition in 2005, with a 9-1 goal advantage over its four games. Willie Sims leads the team with four goals and two assists for 10 points, while five more Matadors all have one goal apiece. Kevin Guppy is the starting goalie, and has allowed just one goal in 368 minutes of action, for a 0.24 GAA. He also has 15 saves and three shutouts.
