LAS VEGAS - Sophomore forward Katie Carney had a hand in all three goals to help the UNLV women's soccer team break out of a scoring slump with a 3-0 win over Utah Valley State in the second game of the UNLV Rebel Women's Soccer Classic on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. In the day's first game, Creighton scored five second half goals to roar past Northern Arizona 6-3.
The Rebels (4-4-3) dominated the opening 45 minutes of play, keeping the ball on UVS's (3-6) side of the field for the majority of the first half. The eventual game-winner came in the 25th minute, as Carney sent a corner kick into the top area of the box, and Tanya Roberts blasted a shot to the top left corner from 15 yards out for a 1-0 UNLV lead. UNLV would come close to adding to its lead in the first half, but hit both the crossbar and the post with shots.
The game remained at 1-0 until the 53rd minute. After drawing a penalty kick due to a foul in the box, Carney slotted the ensuring PK above UVS goalie Tasha Bell to the left post for a 2-0 lead, and her team-leading fourth score of the year. The Rebels then iced the game in the 80th minute, on another Carney corner kick. This time her kick carried to the right side of the box, where Nickie Olson was in perfect position to head the ball to the right post for a 3-0 advantage.
UNLV held a 23-11 edge on shots, and 10-0 on corner kicks. Ciera Nero played the first half and made four saves for the Rebels, while Jenna Huff made her return to the playing field in the second half, and posted three saves in 45 minutes of action to give UNLV the combined shutout. Bell finished with four saves and three goals allowed for the Wolverines.
Northern Arizona (3-8) actually held the lead twice in the game against Creighton (6-2-3), but after leading 1-0 in the 33rd minute, the score would be tied 10 minutes later on an own goal. Cee Cee Odorfer opened the second half with a score for a 2-1 NAU edge in the 49th minute. That lead wouldn't last long, as a score by Katy Peetz just two minutes opened the floodgates, and CU scored five unanswered goals in the next 27 minutes. A corner kick by NAU's Stefanie Smith that curved into the goal with one second to play accounted for the final 6-3 score.
