Men's Soccer

Home Opener

Sept. 8, 2005

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer team will play their home opener this weekend as the Rebels host the UNLV adidas Classic on Friday and Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels, 0-2 on the year, will be looking for their first win of the season but it won't be easy as the field features three ranked teams in Portland (No. 23 in the NSCAA), Northwestern (No. 15 in Soccer America), and US Santa Barbara (No. 18 in Soccer America).

UNLV opened their season last weekend in Wisconsin, losing 2-1 against the Badgers on a penalty kick in the final minutes, and 3-1 against Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the tournament's second day of action. Senior midfielder Rod Dyachenko and sophomore forward Chris Wessel each scored once for the Rebels during the tournament.

The Rebels will open the adidas Classic against Portland on Friday night at 7 pm, while USCB and Northwestern play in the day's first game at 4:30 pm. Portland is 1-0-1 on the year, having tied eighth-ranked Creighton 1-1 at home, before posting a 1-0 win over Cal Poly. Alex Elliott and Jeff Griffin both scored once for the Pilots over the two games.

Northwestern will be UNLV's opponent on Sunday at Noon, and that game will be followed by UC Santa Barbara and Portland at 2:30 pm. NU is 2-0 on the season after winning its own tournament with victories over St. Francis and Western Kentucky. Three players have all scored one goal for the Wildcats, while David Roth has posted two goals.
